Accelerated Reader at SSE
At St. Simons Elementary, Accelerated Reader (AR) helps our 2nd–5th grade students grow as confident, capable readers. Through AR, students track their comprehension and celebrate their reading progress. Our focus is not just on passing quizzes, but on the number of words read each year—because the more students read, the stronger and more curious learners they become. AR encourages students to challenge themselves, explore new genres, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

The Georgia Standards of Excellence in Reading make clear a belief that students who read well independently throughout grades K-12 will be ready to succeed in college and careers.  The standards specify an expected complexity level for students in each grade, and the FlipR program encourages students to select books based on their personal interests as well as their Lexile which will generate an AR reading zone. Students with special learning needs will receive accommodations for achieving success at their level.

Reading practice outside of school is vital to success inside of school and beyond.  Reading practice and more practice, at increasingly challenging levels, leads to enjoyment AND academic success.   To become a good athlete or musician, one practices.  To become a great athlete or musician, one practices a lot and masters skills that are more difficult.  Same with reading and academic success!

Celebrating reading achievement makes our school culture stronger and happier.  We celebrate by awarding and displaying READ posters, awarding custom Big Heads at a special reading assembly, and attending a special field trip called Read By The Sea.

Accelerated Reader at Home

Students can take tests at home or school between the hours of 7 am and 8 pm.  If parents are interested, you can sign up to receive an email when your child takes an AR test and this special feature is called Home Connect. Please use your child’s user name and password to log in to Home Connect and that is their pin and 6 digit birthdate.  Click here to log in to Home Connect Website.

Rewards for Reading

In 2nd grade, children start to develop more complex reading skills that will set them up for future academic success.  Accelerated Reader starts in 2nd grade to give our students time to master those skills and become more confident in reading independently.  AR is an optional and supplemental enrichment program provided by our PTA aimed at improving reading comprehension. The student selects a book within the 1st and 2nd grade reading levels.  After reading the book, the student takes a reading comprehension quiz.  Each book has a point value based on the complexity level. The program records and tracks the progress of each student providing valuable feedback on their reading comprehension.

2nd graders start AR with a Level UP punch card.  The goal is to understand the different reading levels of books and be aware of what is an appropriate book to take an AR test on while still challenging readers.  Students will be encouraged to start at a particular level and move up as they pass quizzes, eventually reaching the goal of 25 books. All 2nd graders who participate in Level Up will be invited to a special reading party.

In 2nd semester, we will change gears with AR and start looking at the points and the numbers of words 2nd graders are reading.  Students will aim to get 50,000 words and 32 points overall.
