St. Simons Elementary Named 2024 National Blue Ribbon School

The U.S. Department of Education has announced that St. Simons Elementary School has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School. This prestigious recognition is awarded to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic performance or significant progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona recognized 356 schools as the 2024 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” Secretary Cardona said. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools reflect the full diversity of American education and serve students from all backgrounds. These schools are led by visionary leaders who uphold high standards and foster a culture of instructional excellence. They showcase effective teaching methods, offer robust professional development for staff, and use data-driven instruction to ensure every student succeeds. Collaboration among families, communities, and educators is a key component of their success.

The Department recognizes all schools based on student performance data including assessment results, student subgroup performance and graduation rates. Schools are recognized in both or either of two performance categories:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools: These schools are among the top performers in
their state as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools: These schools excel in narrowing
achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body.

Principal Katy Ginn expressed her excitement about the school’s achievement.

“I am excited to celebrate the National Blue Ribbon Award recognition with our students, staff, and families. The honor of being recognized as an Exemplary High Achieving School speaks to the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff. St. Simons Elementary was previously recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 1990, and it is exciting to celebrate the continued success.”

St. Simons Elementary joins Glynn Middle School (1984) and Burroughs-Molette Elementary (1986) as a Blue Ribbon School in the district. A National Blue Ribbon School award flag will be displayed in the school’s entryway or on a flagpole, which is a widely recognized emblem of exceptional teaching and learning.
